| I, Polly Cole, am an eternally young artist currently residing in El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de la Porciúncula - a city commonly referred to as Los Angeles.
My journey began in the San Francisco Bay Area. After putting my teenaged mother, Jane, through over 73 hours of breach birth labor - I burst onto the scene of life raring to go. Jane, a prodigy pianist and virtuosic painter, was my first great artistic influence. As a single mother, she would toil by day at the shoestring potato factory or bank or real estate office - and at night would come home to fill our small apartment with the sound and fury of Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninov. She taught me that there is light in everything; from music, to art, to actions - a lesson that I utilize most especially in my photography.
In the mid 80's Jane married a man named Jim, a scientist and musician who carried on the mantle of professor of light. He bought me my first camera, a Canon EOS Elan, which remains in my arsenal to this day.
At 17, I fled the warmer climes and moved to New York. I 'earned' a degree in Film, with a focus in cinematography, from Vassar College. But it was Manhattan where I obtained most of my knowledge - the throbbing pulse of a city so vibrant that it oftentimes took my breath away. Manhattan and its boroughs taught me about form and line, the play between light and dark, and the chaos and perfection of humanity - lessons which I employ in my photography to this day.
When I'm not taking pictures, I write. I am (no, make that was) a photographer and journalist for RealTalk LA, a magazine created by Jay Levin - pioneer founder of The LA Weekly. I've written a screenplay or two and a television pilot or three, some of which are circling around the 7th layer of Hell, also known as 'Development'.
My photographs have appeared in RealTalk LA, JPG Magazine, Everywhere Magazine, F-Stop Magazine, as well as on the cover and in the pages of Me Magazine (NYC). I do both commercial and personal commissions in Los Angeles and beyond. (Bring me out to where you are - I love to travel.)
Contact me to inquire about my super reasonable rates for headshots! You wont get better photographs for less in LA - I do it because I know how it is to be a starving artist!
